How to Keep Your Water Features Safe During Freezing Temperatures

Step 1: Turn Off and Remove Pumps and Accessories

Your pump is the heart of your water feature—but it’s also the most vulnerable component during winter. Before the first hard frost, disconnect and remove submersible pumps, filters, and any decorative accessories such as spouts or lighting.

• Clean the pump thoroughly to remove debris and algae buildup.
• Store it indoors, ideally in a bucket of water, to keep the seals moist and prevent cracking.
• If you have an external pump, make sure to drain all pipes and fittings to avoid trapped water freezing inside.

Step 2: Drain or Lower the Water Level

For smaller fountains and above-ground water features, it’s often best to drain them completely. This eliminates any chance of ice expansion damaging the structure.

For ponds or larger installations, partially lower the water level instead—keeping enough water for aquatic plants or fish, if applicable. Avoid draining a pond fully, as this can disrupt the ecosystem and harm beneficial bacteria that protect water quality.

Step 3: Clean and Remove Debris

Fallen leaves, twigs, and organic debris left behind can decay and release harmful gases under the ice. Use a skimmer or net to remove any floating debris and trim nearby plants. A clean pond not only looks better but also reduces the chance of unpleasant odors or algae bloom when the weather warms.
